World War II Memorial Dedication

College Station, Texas; November 29, 2011 — The Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial Board of Directors is honored to host a dedication of a World War II memorial statue on Wednesday, 7 December 2011 at 11:00 a.m. The date was chosen specifically to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The respectful and patriotic event will take place on the Lynn Stuart Pathway, Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial, Veterans Park and Athletic Complex. The park is .8 miles east of Hwy. 6 on Harvey Rd. (Hwy. 30) in College Station.

The life size bronze statue, one of five planned, is of a US naval aviator in the likeness of LT (JG) George H.W. Bush and is titled “Day of Infamy.” The statue is the work of Navasota sculptor J. Payne Lara. Lara has created four other statues that have been dedicated on the Lynn Stuart Pathway military history trail at Veterans Park.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Henry C. Dethloff, professor emeritus of history at Texas A&M University. Special seating will be available for World War II veterans. Cart transportation along the path will be available for those requiring assistance.

Donations are being accepted for future memorials. Smaller models of the existing memorials are available for purchase.
